I recently lifted my hair a few shades lighter for the summer / as a bit of a lockdown pick-me-up. My hair was pretty dark before, I’d say around a level 4-5, and as the sunnier British weather rolled in, I thought I’d take it up a few shades lighter for a more sunkissed, summery look.
As is always the case when you lighten colour treated dark brown hair, this brought about a lot of brassiness (Between a 5 and a 6 on the bleaching scale). I didn’t want to absolutely wreck my hair, so I didn’t bleach it up any further as I was only looking to achieve a honey shade of light brown.
As I wasn’t looking to achieve a clean blonde, my aim was to leave my hair dyeing escapades there and use toners / tinted conditioners to maintain my colour. After some research on products to achieve a honey brown, I stumbled upon the Aveda Clove shampoo and Aveda Clove conditioner.
Aveda Clove Shampoo & Conditioner Review
Both products are cruelty-free and vegan and are housed in recycled packaging. The Clove shampoo smells sweet like cherry Bakewell tarts and the Clove conditioner has the same scent as the Aveda Brilliant range which is a very clean, fresh scent.
“Ideal for natural brunette and honey blonde tones. Made with organically grown clove to enhance warm tones, while the formula enriches brown hues.”
Aveda
Inspired by Ayurveda, the clove shampoo is made with organically grown clove to enhance honey tones and organically grown coffee to enhance warm brown tones. This is high-end hair care so these products weren’t cheap to buy and I was throwing caution to the wind as there were minimal reviews online. With that in mind, I hope this review helps if you’re thinking of trying one, or both of these products.
The shampoo is only available in a huuuuuge 1000ml bottle which means that it isn’t cheap and not great if you’re just wanting to try it out. It is also worth noting that it is not sulphate free, therefore, it does lather on your scalp, but it doesn’t leave your hair feeling squeaky clean and dry post rinse. As I mentioned, it smells excellent and the scent really lingers in your hair even when dry.
Unlike the shampoo which is a light gel consistency, the conditioner is a thicker cream that actively deposits colour to your hair. With that in mind, I would recommend only using this once a week or every 2-3 shampoos as a leave-on mask for 5 minutes. This is to avoid changing your hair colour completely, or having a lot of product build-up.
What does the Aveda Clove shampoo & conditioner look like on brown hair?
As you can see from the pictures, the Aveda Clove duo knocked out some of the orange brass in my hair and replaced it with caramel/honey tones which look less artificial and more natural.
Is the Aveda Clove shampoo and conditioner worth the money?
I would repurchase this duo, though in all likelihood I’d probably only buy the conditioner again as that seems to have the most clout with the colour payoff, despite me preferring the shampoo product.
Have you tried any Aveda products?
